Disc Jokey ?

A disc jockey (abbreviated D.J., DJ or deejay) is a person who mixes recorded music for an audience; in a club event or rave, this is an audience of dancers. Originally, "disc" (uncommonly spelled "disque" in French or commonly "disk" in American English)referred to phonograph records, not the later compact discs. Today, the term includes all forms of music playback, no matter which medium is used.

The title "DJ" is also commonly used by DJs in front of their real names or adopted
pseudonyms as a title to denote their profession and the music they play.

There are several types of disc jockey. Radio DJs or
radio personalities introduce and play music that is broadcast on AM, FM, digital or internet radio stations. Club DJs select and play music in bars, nightclubs or discothèques, or at parties or raves, or even in stadiums. Mobile DJs travel with portable sound systems and play recorded music at a variety of events. Some mobile DJs also serve as the master of ceremonies (MC) directing the attention of attendees, and maintaining a room-wide focus on what is included in the event's agenda. There are also many competitions that specialise in mixing, scratching or other kinds of techniques.

Other types of DJ use musical performance techniques that allow them to be categorized as performing musicians, depending on the situation.
Hip hop DJs not only select and play music using multiple turntables to back up one or more MCs/rappers, but they also perform turntable scratching to create percussive sounds, and are also often songwriters and/or music producers who use turntablism and sampling to create backing instrumentals for new tracks.

In
reggae, the DJ (deejay) is a vocalist who raps, "toasts", or chats over pre-recorded rhythm tracks while the individual who helps the DJ by selecting tracks to be played is called the selector.

Many electronica artists and producers who also work as DJs often perform music by combining turntablism with keyboards or live electronics. Electronica, hip-hop or reggae DJs also often collaborate and play live music with bands and musicians from several musical genres (rock, heavy metal, jazz or even classical music), using turntables and electronics as musical instruments. According to a 2012 study, there are approximately 1¼ million professional disc jockeys in the world.

The tunes a dj picks to play and in which they mix them comes together to define a DJ style. The DJ style can and should be pliable, depending on what club that is being played in and what kind of music is expected of the dj.

Club DJ equipment may consist of:
Sound recordings in a DJ's preferred medium (for example,
vinyl records, CDs, computer media files, etc.)
A combination of two devices (or only one, if playback is digital) to play sound recordings, for alternating back and forth to create a continuous playback of music (for example, record players, Compact Disc players, computer media players such as an
MP3 player, etc.)
A multiple
sequencer which can mix MIDI tracks with Digital Audio
A
sound system for amplification or broadcasting of the recordings (for example, portable audio system, public address system) or a radio broadcasting system
A
DJ mixer, which is an (usually 2- or 4-channel) audio mixer usually equipped with a crossfader used to smoothly go from one song to another, using two or more playback devices Headphones, or earphones used to listen to one recording while the other recording is being played to the audience, or to listen to both recordings simultaneously; and
Optionally, a
microphone, so that the DJ can introduce songs and speak to the audiences.

Other equipment could or can be added to the basic DJ setup (above), providing unique sound manipulations. Such devices include, but are not limited to:
Electronic
effects units such as delay, reverb, octave, equalizer, chorus, etc. Some club DJs use a subharmonic synthesizer effect which either doubles low frequencies with energy added an octave lower or synthesizes harmonics such that the impression of a very low bass sound is added to the mix.
A computerized performance system, which can be used with
vinyl emulation software to manipulate digital files on the computer in real time.
Multi-stylus headshells, which allow a DJ to play different grooves of the same record at the same time.
Special
DJ digital controller hardware that can manipulate digital files on a PC or laptop.Samplers, sequencers, electronic musical keyboards (synthesizers), or drum machines.
A Midi controller used to trigger different aspects of DJ software, such as
Serato Scratch Live, VirtualDJ and Traktor.

Equipment and technique
Several techniques are used by DJs as a means to better mix and blend recorded music. These techniques primarily include the
cueing, equalization and audio mixing of two or more sound sources. The complexity and frequency of special techniques depends largely on the setting in which a DJ is working. Radio DJs are less likely to focus on music-mixing procedures than club DJs, who rely on a smooth transition between songs using a range of techniques.

Club DJ turntable techniques include
beatmatching, phrasing and slip-cueing to preserve energy on a dancefloor. Turntablism embodies the art of cutting, beat juggling, scratching, needle drops, phase shifting, back spinning and more to perform the transitions and overdubs of samples in a more creative manner (although turntablism is often considered a use of the turntable as a musical instrument rather than a tool for blending recorded music). Professional DJs may use harmonic mixing to choose songs that are in compatible musical keys.

Recent advances in technology in both DJ hardware and software can provide assisted or automatic completion of some traditional DJ techniques and skills. Examples include phrasing and beatmatching, which can be partially or completely automated by utilizing DJ software that performs automatic synchronization of sound recordings, a feature commonly labelled "sync". Most DJ mixers now include a beat-counter which analyzes the tempo of an incoming sound source and displays its tempo in beats per minute (BPM), which may assist with beatmatching analog sound sources.

In the past, being a DJ has largely been a self-taught craft but with the complexities of new technologies and the convergence with music production methods, there are a growing number of schools and organizations that offer instruction on the techniques.

Felguk

Style: “Electro house.”
Best known for: “Our hair.”
Tune of the year: "TJR & VINAI 'Bounce Generation'.”
From: Rio, Brazil
Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2014: “Merk & Kremont.”

ABOUT
While the electro house landscape might have been dominated by the likes of Soulwax, Justice and Boys Noize over the past few years, a number of savvy producers are helping to put their own spin on the genre. One such duo to do exactly that is Brazilian pairing Felips “Fel” Lozinsky and Gustavo “Guk” Rozenthal, aka Felguk.

The only Brazilians to feature in the Top 100 in 2011 and 2012, the Rio boys have obviously lost none of their charm in recent times — as is evidenced by another impressive showing this time around. Heavily endorsed by the likes of David Guetta, Black Eyed Peas, Flo Rida and Madonna (all of whom they’ve remixed), Felguk’s raison d’etre is a powerful and unrelenting sound that’s imbued with a rich crossover ethic.

Unsurprisingly, they’ve delved into a host of different genres as their popularity has soared; so much so that they’ve produced alongside LA dubstep kingpin 12th Planet, Australia house maverick Dirty South, UK rapper Example and Israeli psy-trance pioneers, Infected Mushroom. A dizzyingly eclectic roll call like that is enough to leave your head in a spin. Just wait until you hear the music.

Arty

Style: “Progressive house.”
Best known for: “‘Up All Night’.”
Tune of the year: “Porter Robinson ‘Flicker’.”
From: Engels, Russia.
Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2014: “Audien.”

BIOGRAPHY
It’s always hard for a DJ to juggle playing shows with writing and recording. Creating new music often takes a back seat during rigorous touring schedules, but Russian producer Arty has managed to find the balance during 2014, which made it an “amazing” year for him.

“Between my shows I had plenty of time to focus on making new music,”, he explains. “I wrote and produced a lot of records that I’m proud of, and I can’t wait to share them with people.”

Top of that list of records is Arty’s upcoming debut album, which the producer has devoted a lot of time to over the year, and is scheduled for release in early 2015. Melodic, thumping club house track ‘Up All Night’, with vocals from Angel Taylor, was released earlier this year as the first single to be taken from the upcoming debut full-length, and seems a fair indicator of the kind of huge, colourful tracks expected on the finished album.

Arty has also undertaken some huge remixes during 2014, including reworks of popular lo-fi indie band London Grammar (‘Hey Now’) and progressive producer Porter Robinson. Now, however, Arty is focusing on finishing his own album — although he’ll also be touring through parts of Asia and North America. No mean feat, but as this year has shown, he’s more than up to the challenge.

John O'Callaghan

Style: “Trance.”
Best known for: “Trance.”“Subculture.”
Tune of the year: “Flynn & Denton feat Audrey Gallagher 'Say My Name'.”
From: Navan, Ireland.
Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2014: “James Rigby.”

BIOGRAPHY
John O’Callaghan Biography
Some may know John O’Callaghan as a Dance music icon, some may know him by his initials “JOC” and then there are others who only know his music. It’s obvious even to a newcomer or neophyte enthusiast that John O’Callaghan’s talents far exceed that of just an uplifting producer or Trance remix master. He is an artist, producer, DJ and an internationally respected name in the world of Electronic music. John O’Callaghan has long pushed the boundaries of musical genres in ways that have earned him a stellar reputation across the dance music industry. From the dreamy progressive vibes of the ‘Deep Dream’ mixes to the edgy techno grooves of his ‘Joint Operations Centre’ productions. John O’Callaghan always showcases true diversity in his sound, and has emerged as a leader of the trance movement – a path which all of his fans have loyally followed. With every production he once again proves himself to be one of the most consistent and yet surprising artists, with an uncompromising ability to reinvent and rework any track that catches his eye (and ears).
In the past few years he has encapsulated the true artistry of uplifting melodic trance music resulting in smash hit remixes on the crème de la crème of the finest Electronic music labels around such as: Armada, Black Hole, Vandit, Garuda and of course his heavy hitting originals on his very own revered Subculture record label. John O’Callaghan has long been responsible for taking vocal records and transforming them into extraordinary Trance Classics. This was evident when his remix of Gareth Emery’s ‘Concrete Angel’ hit Number One in the download charts, and the original was voted ‘tune of the year’ by millions of fans on Armin Van Buuren’s ‘A State Of Trance’ radio show. Add to that JOC’s timeless remix of ‘the Doppler Effect’, a remix which was highly acclaimed for it’s creativity.
As an artist that is responsible for creating some of the defining sounds and biggest vocal tracks of recent times, John O’Callaghan has also retained unprecedented levels of credibility within the underground scene. With three studio albums and a discography littered with some of the most iconic Trance records of the recent era, such as: ‘Big Sky’, ‘Find Yourself’, ‘One Special Particle; and ‘Exactly’ continuing to ignite dance-floors worldwide. John O’Callaghan’s rapid ascent into a Trance legacy shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
It’s not only in the studio in which John O’Callaghan has had a monumental impact. As a DJ his world renowned productions have had him travelling the world at a frantic pace. Over the last year he has found himself playing for the biggest festivals and brands in the world such as: Ultra Music Festival (Miami & Worldwide), Cream (Ibiza + Worldwide), A State Of Trance (Worldwide), Stereosonic (AUS), Godskitchen (UK) and many more. Add to that a BBC Radio 1 essential mix, multiple iconic mix compilations and regular sold out Subculture events & it’s plain to see that John O’Callaghan’s sound is more in-demand today that it ever has been.

Subculture
Subculture is defined as a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance with those of the larger culture. This definition is still as relevant now as it has ever been to John O’Callaghan’s respected Subculture imprint.
Originally starting out as a record label that’s known for its consistency and its solid, quality releases. Subculture has quickly developed into much more than just another record label. It has long been responsible for launching and developing the careers of the brightest talents that the Electronic music world has to offer. Today Subculture has matured into a forward thinking concept that now embodies a successful Radio Show, multiple Compilation Albums and sought after Merchandise. Not forgetting the Events that have touched all four corners of the globe including sold out tours in Argentina, Australia, Holland, United Kingdom and the USA to name just a few.
The Subculture brand continues to inspire, impress and will always remain true to the original principles on which it was founded. Subculture can be encapsulated by these three little words: The Good stuff.
The question is: will you be a part of it?

The Chainsmokers

Tune of the year: “'0-100' by Drake.”
From: USA
Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2014: “Besides ourselves? Kygo, for sure...”

BIOGRAPHY
Wise beyond their years and aggressively handsome, these two overachievers are focused on success… Never before has the world seen two furry browed individuals such as these two (seriously we have really bushy eye brows)… As you might have imagined Alex and Drew did not meet on the set of their Vogue Cover shoot while surrounded by super models, but rather somewhere else.

Apart from Social Darwinism, the thing that separates these two men from the rest is their unsettling and uncanny ability to make love...

With live sets and productions that their own mothers describe as, “sounds nice, but a little loud,” these two always put on a show that was not ever described as sexy and life-changing, but should be.

Apart from their unique personalities and boyish good looks, they have many similarities. They each graduated from prestigious North-Eastern Universities, they like hot chicks in yoga pants, enjoy a good burger, and have been rejected from many of the venues they now play at.

See them live and you will understand why the sky is blue...

Whatever, bios suck... we are sorry you even had to read this crap... let our instagram, twitter and music speak for us.

Bingo Players

Style: “Energetic and melodic.”
Best known for: “‘Cry (Just a Little)’, ‘Rattle’ and ‘Knock You Out’.”
Tune of the year: “Porter Robinson ‘Lionhearted’.”
From: Holland.
Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2014: “Oliver Heldens.”

BIOGRAPHY
Maarten Hoogstraten wasn’t like other kids his age. When he was 10, his friends were buying toys to play with, but Maarten was already spending his cash on vinyl and CDs.

“You know how it starts,” he said with a chuckle. “I was the one who bought records when I was young, I bought lots of vinyl, seven-inches, twelve inches, and when CDs came about I bought a lot of CDs, growing up, I spent all my money on music.”
The producer behind the hit EDM act, Bingo Players, got hooked on electronic music when he was a kid, listening to The Prodigy’s “Out of Space,” and wishing he could make the kind of tunes that were being played on Dutch radio. But, at the time, to make dance music, you needed physical equipment—synthesizers and drum machines—far out of his reach at his age.

When he was a teenager, two events would change his life. An early music software program called ProTracker was released, and he would meet Paul Baümer, who would become his musical partner for the better part of the next 15 years until he suddenly passed away from cancer in 2013.

Maarten met Paul through his younger brother in Enschede, Holland, a two-hour drive from Amsterdam. One day, he went over to hang out with Paul’s younger brother, and found that Paul was also making music using ProTracker software. “It was only four channels and was really basic, but it was a start and really fun to do.”
“When we discovered we were both making similar sounding music with the same program we started spending all our time together and became friends right away’” said Maarten.

Over the next decade they began recording; and in 2006 they began recording under the moniker, Bingo Players. Their tracks started to resonate with the EDM crowds in America and abroad. Their songs— featuring buzzing, bouncing synthesizers, crunchy, guitar-like riffs reminiscent of the Chemical Brothers, and powerful, driving beats— are shaped by a memorable lyrical hook or a melody. 2009’s “Devotion” utilizes the catchy vocal hook, and sets it against a funky infectious saxophone riff and syncopated backbeat.

“Most of the time we’d just start with a melody. Then a song would just evolve,” said Maarten of their songwriting process. “We can connect with a song if the melody is strong even though it can still be bare bones. We need to sing along or whistle along or to have an earworm, you know what I mean? Something that sticks in your head.”

Their breakout hit “Cry (Just a Little),” featured a re-recording of the hook from a 1988 Brenda Russell song, “Piano in the Dark.” With the memorable lyric looping around an ebullient melody, it became an instant crossover anthem.
“I was watching VH1 and I saw this ‘Back to the 80s’ program where they played this Brenda Russell song and I thought, ‘Hey, this particular part of the song sounds really cool, maybe we could do something with it in our own style?’”

Though they didn’t start out as DJs, once the demand grew for them to play out live, they learned how to mix on CDJs. Soon, they became regulars on the EDM circuit, playing massive festivals, like Electric Daily Carnival, Tomorrowland, and Coachella.

“I think we started to become better producers once we started to DJ,” he said, noting that they would bring new tunes on the road and play for a crowd to gauge their reaction.

In between playing festivals and clubs around the world, the duo found the time to start their own label, Hysteria (a hat tip to Def Leppard, one of their favorite bands), releasing singles from Carl Tricks (“Mad Dash”), MAKJ (“Springen”), and Henry Fong (“Jump”) as well as Bingo Players tunes.

In 2013, they scored one of their biggest coups. An updated version of their 2011 track, “Rattle,” titled, “Get Up” (Rattle),” with LA-based act, Far East Movement, rapping over a bouncy, catchy beat, became a instant hit. When they first played the tune back in 2011, Maarten and Paul didn’t know if audiences liked it, but then, the single started to pick up steam around the world and slowly continued to grow.
It eventually charted in the Top Ten around the world including; Germany, Austria, France, and Australia (where it ended up going double Platinum), Gold in Canada, reaching the coveted #1 spot in the UK charts, and selling over 200,000 records in the U.S., reaching #5 on the dance charts. The success of the single, and the quirky, humorous video featuring ducks squaring off against hoodlums (which now has over 40 million views) helped propel Bingo Players high into the DJ Mag Top 100 list last year.

But in June 2013, at the height of their success, Paul suddenly fell ill. He was diagnosed with cancer. Everyone was shocked. Despite the prognosis, Paul remained optimistic.

In October, Paul took a turn for the worse and he passed away in December 2013. There was an outpouring of support from the EDM community with peers like Hardwell, Steve Aoki, Kaskade, Skrillex and Armin Van Buuren paying tribute on social media, at shows and in the press.

Maarten was stunned and didn’t know what to do. But Paul’s last wishes were for his best friend and his musical partner to keep making music.

“He always said to me, ‘If you can find solace and continue what we started, please do so. Please continue the music. Carry on the Bingo Players flag,’” said Maarten.
He wasn’t sure if he could carry on. But, he said, “I took a holiday, took some time off to clear my head and think about things. I thought, “Yeah Paul’s right. I should continue, and continue the name and continue his legacy.”

After all, they have a library of finished tracks and ideas they worked on together that have yet to be released and Maarten can continue his and Paul’s dream of making the music that they heard on the radio as kids. The scene might have gotten bigger, and the production might be made on something more sophisticated than ProTracker, but, says Maarten, “The vibe is still the same. People want to have a good time, come together, and experience the music.”

And Bingo Players live on.

Wildstylez

Style: “Hardstyle.”
Best known for: “'Year of Summer', 'Lose My Mind', 'Timeless'.”
Tune of the year: “Noisecontrollers 'Down Down'.”
From: Veenendaal, Holland.
Breakthrough DJ/producer of 2014: “Audiotricz.

BIOGRAPHY
Some artists you recognize from afar. Musicians that have created a unique style of their own, breaking free from current trends to follow a path they paved solely on their own. Wildstylez is one of them. A DJ/producer who has always done what he wants and because of this, with no fear of the unknown, has taken Hardstyle to another level.

A simple matter of daring to be different. Born in 1983 as Joram Metekohy in the small Dutch village of Veenendaal the artist known as Wildstylez knows what hardstyle can do. When he discovered Hardstyle in the early Noughties, an energetic, fraternizing genre that can be brought in different guises. And maybe it’s the different bands he performed in, or just his preference for songs with vocals –but soon Wildstylez is there to present his own brand of Hardstyle.

With Hardstyle becoming more and more influential everywhere, including the burgeoning EDM scene in the US, Wildstylez seems like the designated artist to keep building new bridges between Hardstyle and the other genre’s of music. Nevertheless Wildstylez is an artist with both feet firmly on the ground, remaining loyal to Hardstyle itself whilst working with an open mind, conquering the world in his own special unique way.
