Porter Robinson isn’t short of ambition or confidence. “I don’t want to be the flag bearer for any genre. I really just want to have my own signature, my own sound. I know it sounds crazy, but I want to start my legacy.” Porter was unwilling to be interviewed for his Top 100 DJs profile, but thankfully we were able to glean some of his own words from his latest press release.

His introduction to dance music came aged 12, when he started playing around on pirated software after being inspired by the electronic music on the Dance Dance Revolution video game. It wasn’t necessarily the most prestigious start. “A huge amount of music that I listened to for a long time, like 200 people have probably ever heard these songs,” he says. “And a lot of it was bad, C-grade emulations of dance music being made in Europe.” But by 2010 he’d started releasing his productions, leading to a No.1 Beatport hit with 'Say My Name'. This in turn landed him his first gig at a club in Santa Cruz, California. “It was very much baptism by fire because I had never seen a DJ, I had to more or less do it based on what I had learned on the internet.”

This led to a contract with Astralwerks/Virgin EMI and Porter soon found himself touring five days a week. “It took me to a place where I wasn’t writing music. And I was DJing a lot of other people’s music,” he says. “I think that helped speed up how sick I got of dance music and all of its tropes.” This in turn led to the development of his LP, 'Worlds', and current live show, which, despite his Top 100 DJ rating, doesn’t involve him DJing.
